The NHL is North America's highest level of ice hockey. As the sport is North American, it is highly prestigious. Winning the fabled Stanley Cup is regarded as the sport's highest achievement.
Teams
Chicago Blackhawks
Can we please stop appropriating Indigenous culture? I'd rather see the mascot change to an actual hawk.
Montreal Canadiens
The only francophone team in the NHL, being from Quebec.
Ottawa Senators
The newest incarnation. The original Sens played from 1883 to 1954, winning eleven Stanley Cups.
Seattle Kraken
Ooooh, kraken!
They're also the newest team in the NHL.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Apparently named after a badge, which explains the spelling.
Vegas Golden Knights
The current holders of the Stanley Cup. If you attend a game, you're in for a wild ride.
Conferences and divisions
Currently, the NHL is divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences, which respectively have the Metropolitan and Atlantic Divisions and the Central and Pacific Divisions. That wasn't the case prior to 1993. The conferences were then known as the Prince of Wales and Clarence Campbell Conferences respectively, and had the Adams, Patrick, Norris, and Smythe Divisions.
