The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is a small mongoose indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. A highly social animal living in hierarchies, it has claws greatly adapted to digging and possesses the ability to thermoregulate, enabling it to survive the arid savanna. The hierarchy consists of dominant breeding individuals and non-breeding individuals who take care of the pups. Meerkats are always on the lookout for predators. When spotted, they retreat to their burrow.
Meerkats are somehow very murderous. 1 in 5 deaths are cases where they have been murdered by another meerkat.
