Mercury is the first planet from the Sun and the smallest in the solar system, about the size of the Atlantic Ocean. It is named after the Roman god of the same name, which also happens to be the namesake of the element mercury. The element mercury somehow has the symbol Hg, from Greek hydrargyros, roughly meaning "watery silver".
